The 5th Annual "A Day at the Theatre" December 14th, 2008 Presented by the West Covina Sunrise Rotary
Lunch is at noon and curtain is at 2pm

This extraordinary event is a great event that not only includes a delicious lunch being catered by Jouni's Cafe with your choice of wine or water, an extravagant performance of "The Gift of the Magi" starring Dale Kristen and Bill Hutton, but the proceeds from this event are going to a great local cause.

The money raised from this event will be matched by an outside donor, and then be used to purchase new shoes and socks for needy families. Some come out and enjoy a great day while making some Christmas dreams come true for some local children in need.

Corazon Super Build 2009

We spoke about Corazón Super Build 2009 at our meeting this morning. Some of us participated in this program last year and due to so many sign-up last year, many were discouraged from going. This year is was worked out a bit differently and opportunity for more Rotarians to participate exist. About 6 members rose their hands in support of participating with the program and I want to extend it to all those who did not make it this morning.

For me, Corazón Super Build has to be one of most gratifying and humbling Rotarian experiences so far next to attending the Rotary International Conference which by the way will be held in England next year but this another e-mail...

Meanwhile, we have a cut-off date of Nov 30 to send in our money but want to make sure our Rep, Ken Rowland, has our info so below is the current info on the District Website regarding this event. Please read and let our Pres Gary or me know if you're interested:

General Information
• This year we are currently signed up to build 4 houses through Corazón.
• A composite of 210 Rotary volunteers will be selected from each club contributing to this project to participate.
• Volunteers may be Rotarians, partners and their children over the age of 14.
• Club contributions range from $300 to $2500 depending on their size, as reported in the 2008/09 Directory.
Some Dates to Remember
• The build date is Saturday, May 16th, 2009.
• Most volunteers stay Friday night in Chula Vista at the Ramada Inn (Map).
• On Saturday, May 16th all volunteers meet at a central gathering place @ 6:00 AM and caravan across the border at 6:30 AM on May 16th, 2008.
Some Deadlines to Remember
• Club Applications with payment must be submitted to the Project Coordinator no later than November 30th, 2008.
• Club Applications contain specific information as to your club’s fair share sponsorship commitment in dollars and volunteers.
• Your payment must be received by the Project Coordinator no later than November 30th, 2008.
Some Details to Remember
• As of June 1, 2009, everyone crossing the U.S. border is required to possess a valid U.S. Passport. (Yes, even minors.) Until that time (and appropriate for this May 16th project date) a picture I.D. (CDL) and a copy of your birth certificate will suffice.
• Anyone driving across the border must have Mexican car insurance (available from the Auto Club and online from various vendors.)
• Transportation across the border to and from the job site is the responsibility of the volunteers. (Corazón will organize auto caravans.)
• Locations of the Ramada Inn, the central gathering place, and other information will be available well before the May 16th, 2008 build date.
Come join us for a unique experience that is both humbling and life-changing. For those that have had this satisfying experience, please share it with other Rotarians and encourage them to participate with volunteers from throughout District 5300.

From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world's most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The 4-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI president) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This 24-word code of ethics for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, and the survival of the company is credited to this simple philosophy. Adopted by Rotary in 1943, The 4-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways.

One of the major Humanitarian Programs is PolioPlus, which seeks to eradicate the polio virus worldwide. Through its Educational Programs, the Foundation provides funding for some 1,200 students to study abroad each year. Grants are also awarded to university teachers to teach in developing countries and for exchanges of business and professional people. Former participants in the Foundation's programs have the opportunity to continue their affiliation with Rotary as Foundation Alumni.

A Matching Grant from the Rotary Foundation provided solar energy for three rural

schools near Santiago del Estero, Argentina.

The main objective of Rotary is service — in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. They also support programs for youth, educational opportunities and international exchanges for students, teachers, and other professionals, and vocational and career development. Club Service

Since becoming a member of Rotary, it has been my belief that the membership, not the many programs, projects and fundraisers, but the actual membership is what makes a club successful. For without dedicated, hard working members, a club will sputter. Those willing to put their name on a roster, but not actively work toward achieving club goals, will only lend themselves to a club that can survive but never thrive.

My goal as Club Service Chair is to help provide an atmosphere where members, new and old, are excited about being Rotarians. Where members look forward to Wednesday morning gatherings where friends and family meet. Where members are proud to offer friends and business acquaintances the chance to see first hand, what terrific programs and projects Rotary sponsors. Where members quickly learn that being a member of the West Covina Sunrise family is just that, a family.

My approach to Club Service is to understand and promote the close relationship and networking of the Chair Persons and related committees of the Four Avenues of Service. For example, the annual Scholarship Program is part of the Vocational Service Chair’s responsibilities. However, the related banquet falls under the Club Service Chair’s purview. To that end, I am looking forward to chairing and/or participating in the following projects and programs:

Being directly involved with granting scholarships to graduating seniors, mini grants to deserving teachers, providing glasses or hearing aids to those in need in a third world country and providing books to hearing and sight impaired kids in South America. These programs and others like sponsoring youth activities at the YMCA and giving those in need a boost with programs like Future America allow us the unique opportunity to participate in life changing events. Service Above Self is not just a slogan; it becomes a wonderful way of life.

Four Avenues of Service - International Service

International Services translates into helping others who have so much less than we can imagine. Children in rural villages of underdeveloped countries are left behind since their parents can not afford to care for them. Some of the information Rotarians see daily are the numbers of children who are beyond underprivileged. Listed below are some of the numbers that should never be this large as reported by the United Nations:
--Some 40 million children ages 14 and younger suffer abuse and neglect.
--An estimated 250 million children ages 5-14 are working.
--More than 100 million children live on the streets, vulnerable to exploitation, drugs, and crime.
--Nearly 12 million children under age five die every year from preventable childhood diseases and malnutrition.
--Some 130 million children of primary school age, mostly girls, do not attend school, contributing to shorter life spans and greater susceptibility to poverty and illness.

International Service Projects are designed to meet the humanitarian needs of people in many lands, with particular emphasis on the most underprivileged children and families in developing countries. For this year, West Covina Sunrise Rotary will strive to reach out to some of our underprivileged neighbors in Central America. With the help from everyone in our club, we can make a difference and advance international understanding and goodwill while helping children who are in need. The inter-nationality of Rotary puts all clubs in a unique situation to promote peace and lend a helping hand. With club-to-club contacts, international services should be a priority for all clubs – whatever size they are.

Four Avenues of Service

The Object of Rotary is to “encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise.” Rotary is a service organization. Since 1910, the Rotary Motto has been “Service Above Self.”

Rotary strives to achieve it’s objective of “Service Above Self” through activities in four primary areas. These are often referred to as the Four Avenues of Service.

Club Service
This “Avenue” promotes the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. It involves the activities necessary to make the Club function successfully and achieve its goals.

Vocational Service
This area represents the opportunity that each Rotarian has to represent the dignity and utility of one’s vocation as an opportunity to serve society. Rotarians promote and foster high ethical standards in business and professions and promote the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations.

Community Service
This “Avenue” relates to the activities that Rotarians undertake to improve the quality of life in their community. Particular emphasis is given to helping children, needy families, the aged, the handicapped, and those most in need of assistance. Rotarians strive to promote the ideal of service in their personal, business, and community lives.

International Service
In this area, Rotarians strive for the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. International Service Projects are designed to meet the humanitarian needs of people in many lands, with particular emphasis on the most underprivileged children and families in developing countries.

Newest Member: William Medina.

Our Guest speaker: Michelle McNeil- Director of the West Covina Community Service Department. She reported on the progress of Galster Wilderness Park which is an amazing area of land that was dedicated last Summer of 2007, and a Nature Center was opened in October 2007.

They planned a community out reach program for this past summer called Wild Wednesday's with the success goal set at 20-30 people from the community attending. They provided 12 Wild Wednesday's and the lowest turn out of the summer was 150 people and the maximum attendance was estimated at 250. The park is ran completely through community volunteers so the recent budget cuts have not forced the doors to close at this wonderful facility.

Raffle Grand Prize Winner: Two weeks ago Don Morrin won the raffle and drew the lucky winner at a club record 31 cards remaining (just over a 3% chance of winning). The down side to such a speedy withdrawal is that he almost set the record for the lowest amount won in a Grand Prize (Records are still being sifted to confirm if he holds both records).

Taste of West Covina: The West Covina Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 3rd Annual Taste of West Covina. Get your tickets in advance at a discount price, or get your friends together and buy a pack of 4 tickets for $100. Enjoy food, drinks, and music at this years Taste of West Covina. Future America’s focus is an
anti-gang and anti-drug nonprofit
organization that was
founded by Gary Lawson in
1992. Future America is independently
financed through
generous donations within
the community. Without
business owners continuous
financial support and backing
this program would cease to
exist.
Future America prides itself
in providing the highest caliber
professionals to instruct
participants in the art of entertainment.
Currently they provide afterschool
activities for 7 local
schools 3 days a week , but
now they are doing their summer
program with 30+ kids.
Future America currently
focus on singing and dancing,
but with appropriate financial
backing would like to get back
into acting, modeling, video
broadcasting, and more.

“Don’t throw the baby out with the bath Water”- Gary Lawson
President Gary Lawson kicked off the meeting with some expressions that are casually thrown around without regard to their original meaning.
Such expressions were: dead ringer, graveyard shift, Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water, S.H.I.T, and more. I’d explain them here, but than the only pull we’d have to get you back to the meetings would be the runny egg breakfast special.
Gary Lawson continued his weekly drawing for who wins a lunch with the President drawing. Assistant District Governor Luis Chacon’s business card was drawn for this week.

Guest Presentation: Frank Scalfaro Rose Float Foundation
Our guest speaker for the July 16th, 2009 meeting was the 2007 West Covina citizen of
the year Frank Scalfaro.
Frank is the Chairman and President of the West Covina Rose Float Foundation, a non-profit organization. Scalfaro gave an update of the joint discussion currently
going on in conjunction with Cal-Poly to form a Heritage Park Historical Preservation
to be operated out of Taylor Hall.
West Covina Rose Float Foundation promotes higher education for children through their Community Involvement Scholarship that focuses on celebrating the achievements and efforts of local high school students.
If you missed this year’s Evening of Wine & Roses, held June 21, 2008. You missed a
delicious dinner served by Chef Brian, great music from Cold Duck, and of course Fine
Wine.
The Evening of Wine & Roses is West Covina Rose Float Foundation’s largest fund raiser of the year, and they use the event to unveil the next float design, and recognize the high-school recipients of their achievement scholarships. SM

been out on vacation, and members
have relished in the calm
before the storm to come upon
his return.
In Tedesco’s first meeting as
Fine Master he instated new
rules that make getting fined
easier, and the added potential
that your fine may be doubled.
If you missed this meeting you
may be in for a big surprise
upon Tedesco’s return to the
country.
I am hesitant to put any of his
new terms into writing because
it seems as though the details
to the fine master’s madness
are subject to change without
notice and at his whim.
For now though in his absence
we remain safe, but just be
sure you have a Rotary Coin in
your pocket at all times upon
his return.

Guest Presentation: Luis Chacon Ass. District Governor
Our very own Assistant District Governor Luis Chacon was asked to speak to our club today by President Gary Lawson. The presentation was aimed to bring together the bigger picture of Rotary International, and how the leadership at the international
level trickles down and affects us at our local level.
We were asked not to lose sight of the bigger picture, but still understand that our
size generally limits our capabilities. Working as a team we will cover more ground, and prevent burnout.
Luis also reviewed our goal of netting one new member for the year. Quickly noting that although one sounds like an easy number we have about 6 members that will be officially phased out within the next two months alone.
Membership in some clubs is assigned to an individual member, but our club has opted out of having a single person responsible for membership.
By not having an individual focusing on this
capacity the responsibility falls onto each and every individual member.
Rotary is not open to all, nor is it meant for everyone. We should not blithely go after numbers alone. Instead, use your professional judgment when evaluating the qualities, drive, and ambition of an individual before inviting them to join Rotary. They should be a positive addition towards our club’s goals.

Luis also highlighted that we should try and revive some of our social activities. All work and no play wears people out. We need appropriate distribution of community service and fellowship amongst Rotarians to continue to have a strong impact.

Don Morren is organizing 4 day cruise for May 2009. Instead of the normal 3 day Baja cruise this goes North to Victoria. Details to come, but mark your calendar.

Lone Sorensen presented on the Rotary International Convention
Every we push to go to these, and it was finally in our back yard. Lone Sorensen was the only West Covina Sunrise member to participate in this year’s Rotary International Convention.
Lone attended all 5 days and shared some of her experiences that she had at this
convention. A great many projects that Rotary International is involved with had
booths set-up where you could learn intricate details of how it is going from the people setting it up.
From the report given it is an amazing event that you’d have to experience first hand
to truly grasp it. If you have not had an opportunity to attend a Rotary International Convention you should truly strive to make it to next years
convention.
It will be Rotary International’s 100th Convention and will be celebrated heavily
at Birmingham, England, UK.

Golf Tournament: April 23, 2007.

Greg Benton is the chair for this year’s tournament. WE NEED EVERYONE TO PITCH IN.

Scholarship Committee: At the meeting on February 21st, the scholarship committee made the following recommendations, which were all accepted and approved by the club:

1) Applicants for the scholarships must either reside in the City of West Covina, or attend one of the following High Schools: West Covina, Nogales, South Hills or Coronado Continuation School.

2) Applicants will be ranked giving most emphasis on Financial Need, then Community Service and involvement in the local Community, and then Academic Achievements.

3) We will use the proceeds from the Golf Tournaments as follows: 75% of net proceeds to the Scholarship Program, 25% to Other Local Rotary Programs.

Upcoming meetings:

Wednesday, February 28st: We need to finalize the discussion about our Scholarship Program. Should we pay the award money directly to the student – or should the payment be made to the recipient’s chosen institution. When will the awards be given out? Should we have a banquet? Or attend the Award Ceremonies at the schools? Or should we invite the award winners to a Breakfast Meeting? Or all of the above?

Wednesday, February 28th: The annual 4-way speech contest will take place at our regular breakfast meeting. Come meet the four contestants for this year and cheer them on as they perform their speeches. If you have any questions, please contact Miriam Tennant.

Raffle News: Well, with only 4 cards left, it was bound to happen. The lucky raffle winner finally picked the Ace of Spades and I am very, very happy to announce that I was the lucky one. And since I just totaled my car, I can surely use the money… Vatche, Show me the Money!!!

Golf Tournament: April 23, 2007.

Greg Benton is the chair for this year’s tournament while Bill Tarrozi is serving as his assistant tournament chair. However, WE NEED EVERYONE TO PITCH IN. At today’s meeting, Greg and Bill handed out a detailed schedule of the main tasks we have to complete before and during the tournament. As you all know, there is plenty of work to be completed in advance of the tournament, and we need your help now. Please call Greg or Bill to volunteer.

Also, if you know of potential sponsors, please provide info to Bill and he will make sure that letters are sent out and phone calls are made.

Wednesday, January 24th: Greg & Billy will provide the first weekly update of the progress for the golf tournament.

Wednesday, January 24th: The principal from Monte Vista Elementary School will speak. (the recipient school of our Shoes & Socks program)

The speaker will be Fary Moini of the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club, who will present her heart-warming story of her work with refugees in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Red Ribbon Rally: The Red Ribbon Rally was a huge success. It was estimated that we baked approx. 150 more lbs of pancake mix than last year – and that amounts to a whole lot of pancakes…………

Program: The speaker was John Mansino, with the Coalition on Urban Renewal & Education. IT was a very good presentation full of some very scary statistics in regards to the state of the public educational system. His organization is trying to make sure students enrolled in non-performing schools can utilize the No-One Left Behind vouchers to transfer to better schools – something that is not happening now. They are also trying to enrich the education and get the schools to emphasize Reading, Writing, Math & Science. Schools in the US lack far behind most Asian and European schools in testing, especially in Science & Math. They are also very concerned about the many forms of sexual education being taught to kids as young as 6 in 1st grade. Some of his examples were outrageous. The second annual Day at the Theatre was a huge success. Not only was the play hilarious, the food was great, and we made a lot of money. The profits from the event is estimated at $5,556…….. What an all around great event.

Also, lets all thank Jacob Jouni who donated all the food for the event. His restaurant is located at 930 N. Central Ave, in Upland. Stop by for lunch or dinner – or use him for your catering needs. He will cater for 25 people -- or for 250 people.

Shoes & Socks Program: Because our speaker did not show up as planned, we instead discussed the Shoes & Socks program for Christmas. Kris Kelso & Carolina are going to contact 3 local elementary schools & several different stores to explore the best way to buy the shoes. Next week will be the second meeting of the committee – right after the regular meeting.

Red Ribbon Rally: This Saturday at West Covina High School. We start setting up at 6AM. We need volunteers from 6AM till approx. Noon.

West Covina Taste of the Town: Roaring 20’s VIP Casino Night - What a Blast…
If you didn’t attend Friday night you missed a grand good time. Jazz music, singers, dancing, gambling and lots of great food. Silent auction and raffle too. But the highlight of the night was the doctor and his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Forest Tenant put on a show for all – swing dancing to all of our delights… Who knew Forest could dance like that and Mirian being swung and tossed around like a teenager …. They sure put all the younger folks to shame with their athleticism. Now time to go work out.

Earlier this year we began the process of providing a venue filled with programs that would draw Rotarians from the most distant portions of our district 5300 to the 2007 District Conference. We are developing small committees that will be organized at the club level to get the word out and encourage other fellow Rotarians to get the wheels moving and become a part of the excitement. If you have fun being in on the action, helping to plan, eager to serve, you are needed. Call me now so we can begin to spread the workload out and at the same time, Share the Adventure. We are on the road to success and we need to be able to share this with hundreds of Rotarians and their friends. This event has all the potential of being the most attended conference in years. If you believe that we Rotarians are doing the right things, then step up to the plate and share Rotary with your friends and neighbors.

Program: Today's speaker was Sylvia Whitlock. Not only was she the very first FEMALE Rotary member, she was also the first female president of a Rotary club. The year was 1987 - yes, that’s right 1987, was the first year that Rotary International let a women become a member – and they didn’t do it willingly. It took several years, several courts – all the way to the US Supreme Court before Rotary International bowed to the pressure and let women join. Sylvia was a member of the Duarte Rotary Club - “The Mouse That Roared” club when she first joined. She is now a member of Claremont Rotary. Her presentation was great. She is very low key and tells a the very interesting story of her trials and tribulations in a very entertaining manner. Thank you Sylvia.

Potential Rotary Leadership Seminar: Would you like to sharpen your leadership skills? Would you like to receive advice from "the experts" on how to be more effective in leading in your Rotary Club, other community organizations or your business? Are you interested in being a Rotary Leader but don't know where to begin?

District 5300 is offering the 2006 Potential Rotary Leadership Seminar (PRLS) to provide you with these answers and more! The goal of PRLS is to provide a set of training sessions wherein current and future Rotary leaders learn to become more effective in their leadership roles. The program is designed to encourage those whose goals include a basic comfort with a leadership position. Every subject is intended to be of benefit either inside or outside Rotary.

The basic PRLS curriculum includes:
• Communications
• Basic Leadership Principles
• Leading a Meeting
• Basic Public Speaking
• Rotary, Your Club and You
• Leading And Motivating Volunteers
Presenters include past and present District 5300 leaders and leaders from the greater community. Each PRLS seminar is different in content, so even if you’ve attended once, come again!
Those who attend a PRLS training meeting and participate in other Rotary leadership events receive recognition at the District Conference and a special PRLS pin.

Governor's Visit: The Governor’s visit September 5th was a great success. We had a wonderful dinner at South Hills Country Club attended by approx. 100 Rotarians and guests. And Gary was honored by our club, as well as Don Morrin & Mirian Tenant. Also a special shout out to Luis and Carolina Chacon who have just become Paul Harris fellows.. Congratulations to all.

If you are interested in hosting an exchange student, or know of someone interested in the program (must be between the ages of 15-18 to participate), please contact Linda Logan directly. President’s Message: First and foremost, I want to thank the M&M club and all volunteers who turned out to help make our 14th Annual Golf tournament a success. Fortunately, we had plenty of Rotarians and friends and family of Rotarians who showed up the day of the event to give of their time. As Mark & Marc have noted, we can never have too many volunteers. The Golf tournament was a huge success and we will meet on Friday, May 12th to “wrap up” and take notes for next year.
Well, only eight more meetings until I’m tossed to the past-president bone yard. However, I am in good company. I have told our next president (Vatche) that he has my full support in his year. I hope you will do the same.
Our “Our Throw-Out” party is scheduled for Saturday, June 24, 2006. More details to follow, please mark your calendars and plan to attend.

Celebrity Golf Tournament -- April 24th, 2006.
The tournament was a huge success. Thanks to Mark & Marc for all their hard work. And thanks to all the volunteers who helped put together such a great event.

Meeting news: The last several meetings have been busy for the Sgt. of Arms. It seems a lot of our members like to vacation! Miriam and her husband went skiing in Mammoth, which cost her an additional $20 at the wheel. Kris Kelso and his girlfriend went to Death Valley – his spin was worth $25. Mark Tedesco and his wife went to Mexico on a kind-of-second- honeymoon -- their daughter just got married and is on her honeymoon and since dad forked over the cash for the wedding it seems he thought he deserved a little vacation too, and that cost him $15 at the wheel. Bruce Simms went to Needles with his family, and his spin cost him $25 – really cheap considering Carolina Chacon was trying to sell photos of Bruce posing in rabbit years for Easter……. Lastly but not least – we had a BIG 50 Birthday spin. None other than Luis Chacon. He got away cheap – a measly $15.
Oh, I almost forgot – Bill Tarozzi wasn’t wearing his pin and spun for $15. He tried to get out of spinning, claiming we were all lucky to see him fully dressed! It seems his wife is out of town and he is having problems ‘locating’ his clothes…..
At the latest meeting, Greg Benton got to spin. It seems he was featured in an article in a local paper. He is getting some attention as he tries to change the general public’s opinion about lawyers, trying to convince us that they are not all bad….

Member news: Gary, Gary, Gary… the length you will go through to get some attention….
All joking aside. I hope you are healing well and will have one of the best looking noses in town in a couple of weeks.

Group Study Exchange : What are 5 strangers doing in our District? If you didn't already know, we are currently hosting 5 individuals from the Group Study Exchange with District 1910 Austria-East, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary and Slovenia. Chris Leydolt is the team leader and recently retired from natural gas and investments. Masa Ostruh a lawyer. Iris Marlovits works with the chamber of commerce. Szabolcs Horvai is an ENT doctor, while Simone Scholz works in the telecommunications industry.
They are here to travel through our district, experience our culture and visit with Rotarians of their same vocation. We are charged with hosting them, showing them a good time, cultural and civic experience. In return they will speak to a few of our clubs while they are here. In these talks they will share their experiences and describe their lives back home. Please contact GSE Chair Charles Barr for more information about this group. They arrived on April 22nd and will finish off their tour with our District Conference on May 20th.

Now our district needs your help. We're looking for a few great Rotarians. Do you fit the bill? Do you know someone else? We need some applicants to travel to Austria-East, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary and Slovenia next April. Yes that's right, we need to find someone willing to travel through Europe and lead a group of young professionals. This is an incredible opportunity for anyone. Good Friday Breakfast: The San Gabriel Valley YMCA’s annual Good Friday Breakfast at South Hills Country Club on April 14th, 2006 was a great success. The speaker, David Frost, a former Angel’s pitcher, was a riveting story teller. It was fun to hear his stories of his days in major league baseball. And also his way of re-finding Christ after years of ignoring his basic beliefs. I hope we get invited again next year.

Night out on the Town: The West Covina Lions are hosting their annual Night out on the Town on June 1st at the Lakes Plaza by Edwards Cinemas. For $20 you get to sample great food from many local restaurants and to finish off the evening – you get tickets to the theatre.

Here’s your chance at winning $1,000.00 (One Thousand Dollars) CASH $$$: The East Valley Community Health Center will have a raffle on their Gala night, June 2, 2006. Winner need not be present to win. Tickets are $10.00 each. Please see Carolina Chacon for tickets.

Program: The speaker was Officer Ken Plunkett with the West Covina Police Dept’s special Graffiti Task Force. He gave an informative presentation about the graffiti problem in West Covina. I had no idea that the police dept gets over 900 calls a month for graffiti in West Covina alone. One of our own, Jessika Martinez, has had some personal experience with etching at her store location, and the problem is much more widespread than I think most of us realized. Officer Plunkett also passed along several ‘art’ books confiscated from taggers. What a shame that talented youth choose to vandalize vs. doing something creative in the arts.

President’s Message: Not sure what most of our fellow Rotarians had for dinner Tuesday night that made them so “rowdy”. I had no control of the meeting thanks to Bruce Sims, Kris Kelso and our very own Sgt at Arms. Unbelievable! Maybe they were too excited to be in a different environment since we met at the Mariposa Inn Mexican Restaurant due to remodeling at our usual hang out. What ever the case may be, I hope next week they give me a break and behave like adults, I may be asking for too much. Our Golf tournament meeting was very successful, we need more member involvement. Remember this is OUR biggest fund raiser of the year, we need all of you to make it as successful as possible.

Meeting news: This was a busy meeting for the Sgt. of Arms. We had 3 birthday spins, Miriam Tennant, Jessika Martinez, and Luis Chacon for his daughter Matilda for a total of $60.00. But that was not it for the spins. Kris Kelso had to pay $15 for his ‘No Comment’ Spin (the comment would have to be bleeped out). Bruce Sims had to spin when his cell phone rang at the beginning of the meeting. He tried to get the fee waived by claiming it was simply a Reminder to start the meeting Ring – but no go. And then poor Gary Lawson had to spin the familiar Unfriendly spin. It seems the mole reported that Gary isn’t quite greeting members the way he should. However, later in the meeting, Gary got his $15 waived by majority consent when he volunteered to take over the program duties for June ( June was left without a program coordinator with the departure of Alex Rodriquez from the club) I just wonder who the mole is ?? Gary, unfriendly??

Henry Morgan of the Covina Sunrise club lost his wife Joy this week. The memorial will be this Saturday, April 1st, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, on 3rd & Badillo in Covina. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to the Joy Morgan Memorial Fund.

As usual a local charity will also be featured and given the chance to appeal to the local business community for support. Program: Tony Long, with the Diabetes Care Education & Pharmacy Services of West Covina provided us with some very well received information about Diabetes, sugar levels in the blood, diet and many other health issues. Diabetes is the 5th highest cause of Death in the US, and #1 cause for blindness. Books, books, Books: THE NYAHURURU, KENYA LIBRARY PROJECT By: Shannon Heintz, a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer serving in Nyahururu, Kenya.

Did you know that 80% of Kenyan’s are literate? Most people assume that Africans aren’t literate and minimally educated. In Kenya, primary education is free and most children attend school. English and Kiswahili are the national languages of Kenya and both are taught in school. Yet, with all of this education many Kenyan’s do not read books. Not for lack of wanting, it’s lack of money. Kenyans live on about 70 Kenyan Shillings (Ksh) per day ($1 USD = 73 Ksh). It is enough money to feed a family of four. Storybooks and novels cost about 300 Ksh to 1500 Ksh each, putting the written word out of reach for all but the wealthiest. People know how to read in English, many of my neighborhood children can, but simply cannot afford books.

I am writing to you because my community needs and wants a library. As a public health volunteer, I teach health and work with people living with HIV/AIDS, however, my side project is running a library from home. I currently have over 80 primary and secondary school students, and adults taking part in this book borrowing program. However, I cannot meet the demand. I am in need of the following books: beginning English books, illustrated storybooks, early readers, young adult and novels -- Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, and Harriet the Spy. Also, Illustrated children’s books, Dictionaries, World Atlases, Children’s Illustrated Bibles and bible stories, Christian adult fiction, Christian young adult fiction, books by black American authors, and about black Americans. I could also use the following: Bro-Dart book covers for hardback books, construction paper, markers, crayons, educational posters, stickers, etc. My mailing address is: Shannon Heintz, Peace Corps Volunteer, P.O. 4- way speech: This year’s contest took place at Industry Hills Rotary Club, Tuesday, March 14th. ‘Our man’ Anthony Orta, did quite well, finishing approx in the middle. Over all he was very impressed with his experiences at the competition and plans on becoming a Rotarian. He also hopes to start speech ‘competitions’ or speech training for his students after he becomes an elementary school teacher. Tom Murphy, who has now competed 4 years in a row, finished 2nd…… A great accomplishment. And after hearing his speeches for the last 2 years, I think it is safe to say that he will be using his presentation skills no matter what he chooses to do after school. As Miriam Tennant said --- He really, really should have won!

President Elect: Our incoming president, Vatche Kelartinian, attended the PETS training seminar this past weekend, and it was an overall great experience and very educational for Vatche. We all better get ready, as Vatche has spoken: We will be doing a lot more community service projects next year!

The “U.S.S. District 5300” is charting its course for a magnificent 2006-2007 cruise, under the able direction of Admiral (er, District Governor) Christine Montan.
NAVIGATORS” training, required for leadership personnel facing the challenge of sailing the 2006-2007 seas with Admiral Christine, is scheduled for SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 2006 at Etiwanda Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga (full details to follow). Now is the time for Presidents-Elect to enlist the participation of their club leaders, and new recruits, in setting the correct course for the new service year. Now is the time to mark those calendars. Now is the time to make the commitment. Senior Officers will lay out the course, provide you’all with the tools for success, and provide you with the key launch information for a successful cruise. (And, Lunch will be served!) sociable mixing of officers and enlisted personnel (all members of the crew) is planned for the evening of April 21.

District Assembly for the 2006-2007 Rotary Year: April 22, 2006, Etiwanda Gardens. All Officers and Committee Members should plan to attend. For those of you new on the board -- and we welcome and thank you --- the district assembly is a “training” session for the various roles on the board.

Rotaract Club: The first local Rotaract Club has been established by students in the greater San Gabriel Valley. The installation dinner will be held March 24th at Citrus College. The cost will be $20 for the dinner. We will provide more dinner and contact information in the next newsletter.

Public Safety Recognition Luncheon: The West Covina Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a Thank You Luncheon for the West Covina Police Department and Fire Department on March 16, 2006. Many service awards will be given out to the many special people who serve the West Covina Community. This will be a great opportunity to show your support of our local law enforcement and fire departments. Per Gary Lawson this event is sold out. Some 205 people will be attending this year, really showing the people in law enforcement, fire and city communications how much they are appreciated. In fact so many people are attending, that per Frank Wills, if President Bush showed up, he would not be able to get in. Good thing for Bush, Dave Harris said he would give up his seat. So Bush, if you are available ……………. At the Appreciation Luncheon the trophy for the winner of the Shoots & Ladders Event, The Police Dept., will be handed out. In addition, the money raised from the event will be donated to the Fire & Police Departments who will each receive $1,799.57. This amount is almost triple that of last year.

Program: Getting to Know each Other. Bruce Sims was the Master of Ceremonies (under the direction of the absent Diana Veloz). We split into groups of 5 and shared a funny, memorable or embarrassing event with the rest of the group. Afterwards, the 'winner' from each table shared their funny moments with the whole group. We heard some quite funny stories and shared some early morning laughs.

Hats Up: Don't ever ask Miriam and Forrest Tennant if they will escort you to your wedding in one of their Old Model Cars ---- they may show up a day or so late!

Raffle winner: Our new member Mary got the lucky ticket and walked away with $10.00. Still many, many more cards to go.

Happy Birthday to Dave Harris - who demanded we sing Happy Birthday to him. But I guess for a $20 spin we can all sing a little.

4- way speech: This year’s contest is well under way and we were treated to two great speeches at the meeting. The first speech was by Anthony Orta, who is a senior at Bishop Amat High School. This is his second year participating in the competition. He will be attending Chapman University next year majoring in secondary education with hopes of becoming a teacher. Tom Murphy, who is also a senior at Bishop Amat, is participating for the 4th straight year. He was the local winner last year and did quiet well at the regional level -- he ‘plans’ to win the whole competition this year ! He will be attending Colorado State majoring in Construction Management next year.

President’s Message: Please plan to attend our next Golf Tournament Meeting, Wednesday, February 22, 2006 at 8:30 AM. With your help this will be the biggest and best golf tournament ever. Give our club some of your time and input, this is our event. Everyone can participate in one way or another.
Valentine’s Day according to the Bentons: Every year Greg gives flowers to Kathy for her Birthday -- and then he gives her a small valentines present every day till Valentines Day…… when she again gets flowers ( violets I believe it was this year). That equates to 8 days of Valentines for Kathy! And who said Lawyers are not Romantics. Great job Greg. And to all other men - you should make note of this and remember next year. Let’s see who can top the 8 days of Valentines in the Benton household.

The Full Monty: for the adventurous and daring the Grove Theatre of Upland is now featuring the play The Full Monty. Per Don Morrin the play is phenomenal – but for adults only -- apparently they do the Full Monty, literally…… If you are interested call the Theatre.
Member news: Marc Taylor tried hard to raise some funds as the alternate Sgt of Arms for the day. It seems Diana Veloz has been seen sporting around town in a brand new convertible Mercedes SL500, so she of course got to spin.
Carolina Chacon has received the Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business Community Service Award for the year. Congratulations. But it seems a president cannot spin. Luckily for us, our very own Legal Advisor stepped in with the resolution. Since the award received by Carolina is Community Property, Luis is also the recipient – alas, a spin for the club. Carolina tried to argue that all Luis ever does is surf with his two teenage buddies Reniero & Bruce Sims, and that he doesn’t deserve any credit for the award, but to no avail.
Program: Kathy Benton, the executive Director of Stepping Stones for Women, had the floor for the day, and shared some very scary statistics. There are over 90,000 homeless people in the Greater Los Angeles area, and The San Gabriel Valley now has the 4th most homeless. Of the homeless, over half are single women with children. Stepping Stones for Women is a two year program providing not only shelter, but also education, training, spiritual guidance and a stable environment so the women can grow and evolve from the program able to live on their own, work and take care of their families.

Program: The West Covina Unified School District has over the last couple of years implemented a Literacy Coaches Program and is looking for volunteers to work within the program. They need volunteers to not only read to the kids, read with the kids, listen to the kids read, and to encourage them to keep up their studies and continue their education – in other words – being good role models for the many disadvantaged students in the District. The District has many different programs available at all grade levels from Kinder Garden through High School. Please contact Gary Lawson if you are interested. You can volunteer every day or once per year. The volunteering opportunities in the classrooms are endless…..

Presidents Message: The Southern California Foundation Dinner is February 11, 2006 at the Pacific Palms in Industry Hills. I will email a flyer to you for more details. The district is in need of silent auction items, if you have an item you can donate please let me know as soon as possible. Our club has been asked to donate one item. This is a great event, if your schedule permits plan to attend.

Singing: Don, Where were you? Diana Veloz invited her new assistant, Leo, to our meeting and as is customary, we sang the welcome song -- well, it is questionable if you can call it singing! Gary’s lead was so bad, the Country Club employees were laughing in the hall ways…….. It was so bad Henry Morgan, visiting from Covina, wouldn’t even join in. Maybe our next program should be some singing lessons!

The Mole has Spoken: It seems we have some ‘Unfriendly Rotarians’ among us. Gary Lawson was pointed out for not always greeting The Mole. However, I don’t think he can claim the title of Mr. West Covina Sunrise Unfriendly Rotarian, as he tried to do. Another notch from The Mole went to Rick Marshall – Rick it seems The Mole would like to say Good Morning to you every week.

Member News: Did you know that Gary Lawson looked just like a cute little girl as a toddler? With long, lustrous, blond curls – gleaming eyes and chubby cheeks! Yes, it is true. One big poster board and several child hood photos produced in secret by Bill Tarozzi decorated the speaker’s podium in honor of Gary for the day. What a treat!

Presidents Message: Well you have survived having me as your president for six months, only six more months to go. The goal set by our district governor is to increase our membership by one member, net. We started the year with 27 members, we are down to 24. To accomplish our district goal we need to bring 4 new members to our club. I know we can do it, please keep Rotary on your mind as you go through your day; always scanning for potential new members. Invite someone you admire to have breakfast, all we need is 4 new members!

Presidents Message: This is the last Newsletter of 2005. The New Year brings opportunity for new beginnings. Let’s make 2006 our most exciting, successful and fun year ever. With your participation our programs will not only be successful, but we will have fun in the process. Please leave room in your New Years’ resolutions list for Rotary. Plan to attend every meeting, participate in every event or as many as possible. Together we can make a difference. From my family to yours, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Nominations: It is time to nominate your fellow Rotarians to serve on the board for next year. Please send an email to Carolina Chacón with the names and positions for the people you would like to nominate. Nominations so far: Mark Tedesco for President Elect – declined probably! (Mark may be moving from our area in the next 2 years). Don Morrin for Club Service – Don, do you accept? Bill Tarozzi for treasurer, who accepted.

Christmas Baskets: On December 17th we gave out this year’s Christmas baskets. Approx 80 families from Love Inc. came and enjoyed getting their basket with a turkey, stuffing, yams and other can goods & toys for the kids. Since we had prepared baskets for 100 families, the extra baskets went to families in the West Covina Police Dept’s program for Abused Women and Alex Rodriquez and Mark Tedesco took the last baskets to the Community Center in Rancho Cucamonga, where they were received with much appreciation.

Thank you to Kris Kelso and the YMCA for providing their facility for this project, and Thank You to Mark Tedesco for chairing this project.

There was a rather low turn out of Rotarians to help put the baskets together and also to help hand the goodies out to the families. We need to remember that we are doing projects such as the Christmas Baskets for the needy families in our community – not for our own conveniences – as Mark Tedesco so eloquently pointed out at our weekly meeting – which also had a low attendance!

Wheel spinning: It seems the pin check works every time – as 3 members found out this week. Dave Harris also spun in honor of the, oh so special birthday we are celebrating this Sunday.

Program: Carol Henault, Executive Director of Reading is Fundamental of Southern California gave a very enlightening presentation about the effects of reading to and with our children. Especially the effects of not reading to our children are felt by society all around us.

• 82% of prison inmates are high school drop outs
• More than half of juvenile offenders read below 4th grade level
• In our inner city neighborhoods, 66% of the residents cannot read or have very, very low literacy rates
• In the Greater Los Angeles area, 53% of adults have low literacy skills ( that is 3.8 million adults )
• The estimate of how many prison beds we will need in the future is determined by the number of 4th grade students who read below their grade level
• Studies have shown that illiteracy is passed from parent to child

When we read to kids and spark a love of books and reading in that child, we are giving that child the ability to learn and to grow up and have success in life.

Reading is Fundamental is the nations largest children’s literacy organization and receives funding from the federal government as well as grants from many Charitable Foundations. These funds are distributed to the many local RIF organizations throughout the US. Reading is Fundamental of Southern California ( RIFSoCal) is one of the largest such local programs. In the 2005-06 school year, RIFSoCal will provide over 125,000 new books to children in the greater Los Angeles area. For many of the kids who participate in the program, they will receive their first book to take home and begin their very own library. One of the remarkable features of the RIF program is the reliance on volunteers which enables the program to utilize approx. 92% of all funding for the actual program instead of for overhead, salaries etc. so a donation of $100 will provide 50 new quality books to give to children.

News Flash!
An extraordinary event that has never happened before.
A Rotary member thrown out of South Hills Country Club.
And the President Elect that is….

Presidents Message: Here I was concerned about the M&M club and Bruce, I would have never suspected Vatche would get into trouble. On a very positive side, an employee from Citrus Valley Health Partners approached me and thanked the West Covina Sunrise Rotary for showing our support. Attending events such as this breakfast will build “good will” in our community. For those of you who attended and where on your best behavior, Thank You! Vatche, I believe you have a “date” with our wheel next Wednesday.

We need whole frozen turkeys, can goods such as vegetables, yams, toys, books etc. – however, remember we need enough for 100 families. If you have any contacts at local grocery stores please call chair Mark Tedesco with the info. We will also need to put the baskets together, the date is Friday, December 16, 2005 at 6:00 PM. We will assemble the Baskets/Bags at Edgewood Middle School, Bldg E6 (YMCA Bldg) where Rotarian Kris Kelso works. A quick guide to the site from the 10 Fwy is exit Sunset, go south to Merced, make a right unto Merced, the first street on your left will be Trojan Way – make a left unto Trojan. The School will be on your right hand side and Bldg E6 will be the first Classroom, a white building not to be mistaken with a couple of maintenance bldgs near by. More details from Mark Tedesco will be made on our next Club meeting. We will be handing out/delivering the baskets on Saturday, December 17, 2005.

Program: A wonderful Christmas performance by the WestCoveBears ( the West Covina High School Dance & Performance Team) They held their own Idol contest and the show was not only entertaining, spirited but also funny. Congrats to a great team performance. The team is getting ready for a trip to Europe, including Paris next year. We wish them well.

News Flash continued!
For the early risers, the fun started long before the musical performance ever started. Our very own President Elect, Vatche Kelartinian, was politely asked to leave, to please gently go right back out the doors he just came in from, and egress the premises of the South Hills Country Club. Now you are probably all wondering -- what in the whole world did he do to upset the management at our beloved Country Club. He wore denim. How could you forget Vatche, after all these years…… Do I even need to bring up the word Spin, Wheel, Money, Spin……….. But then again. I must congratulate you, Vatche, for being ever so resourceful. Instead of quietly leaving, embarrassed and all, Vatche simply went to his car, dug out some rather wrinkled Khaki shorts and an old Sports Sweatshirt – and came right back into the Country Club. I don’t know of many who would have dared that stunt. But they let him in, and he got to enjoy the show with the rest of us. This is really something to remember a couple of summers from now for Vatche’s Throw Out Party.

Breakfast with Santa at Applebee’s: On December 17th, 7:30AM Applebee’s and Future America have joined forces to provide some holiday fun for needy children and their families. The kids will be treated to breakfast and photos with Santa and his elves, while the adults will receive breakfast and a certificate for lunch later. Tickets are $8.00 each. You can buy tickets for yourself and for others, or simply make a donation. Please contact Gary Lawson for more info.

Skinny, tall, short, obese, or just at the right weight -- we all have our health issues. And Dr. Lee Lau helped us pin point some of those issues at this week’s meeting. He was kind enough to bring in a Body Fat % measuring apparatus ( please don’t ask me for the real name  ) and we all had the opportunity to get weighed and have our body fat % measured. Thanks – Dr. Lau, right after we all feasted on Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, yams, pumpkin pie …..
Actually, it was a very informative presentation. Thank you Dr. Lau

Presidents Message: Who do you know that would make a great addition to our club? We have membership positions available for the following; public relations, restaurant owner, attorney, firefighter, dentist, jester, florist, doctor, nurse, teacher, stunt driver, get the message? Invite someone who will make a positive addition to our club. The more outgoing, giving Rotarians we have the easier our tasks become while doing more for our community and the world.

Sad news: Desi has decided to leave the club. He is finding himself too busy with work and a new baby at home to attend meetings and functions. We wish you well Desi, and don’t forget, you can always come back.

Member News: Greg Benton just found out that he passed the law exam. Congratulations, congratulations. Now we officially have our very own Club Council. And Greg got to spin.

It was yet another very busy day for the Rotary Wheel, starting with Chris Kelso who spun as soon as he entered the room. He had to spin because he ran out of gas on the freeway and caused Dave Harris to be late for the meeting. Now, really Chris, how many times are you going to see how far you can drive with the red warning light on – without running out of gas ???

Bruce Simms had to spin the customary Birthday spin – but I don’t think he looks a day older. Must be all that toxic waste from the tires (info from past meeting!)

Luis Chacon had to spin because his daughter has been accepted at the prestigious Chaminade University in Hawaii -- I call for a Rotary Retreat once the Chacon’s buy property in Hawaii.

Golf Tournament: You all better memorize the date for this year’s golf tournament – otherwise you will be spinning the wheel like Dave Harris and Lee Lau both found out.

Program: Guess what. If you exercise you can reduce your body fat! The Body fat % measurement was fun, even given the seriousness of the matter at hand. Dr. Lee Lau gave interesting details about the whole process, how exercise and dehydration affects the reading of the machine. Dr. Lau is involved with the Northview High School Wrestling team and the State is now mandating that students are tested for body fat and a minimum weight the students can weigh is established early in the school year. Several wrestlers have died from malnutrition associated with competing in wresting thereby given the State the reason to regulate the sport some what.

ROBOTS … ROBOTS … ROBOTS.. ROBOTS… Wednesday morning turned into an invasion by the Robots from West Covina High School’s First Robotics Team!!
If you missed the meeting, you missed out on a special treat.

Presidents Message: With the departure of our President-Elect Alex Rodriguez, not only is there a void of a very valuable member but also the position of President Elect is vacant. It is imperative that we fill this position as soon as possible. One of our members’ suggested that we go to the person who received second to the last votes for president elect in 2004 and ask him if he’ll step in. I am happy to announce that Vatche Kelartinian has accepted this mission and if there is no opposition from our members, a Congratulations to Vatche will be in order. Sad news: As you probably have heard by now, Alex Rodriquez is leaving the club. Today was his last meeting. He has accepted a job with the City of Rancho Cucamonga as Deputy Fire Chief. Congratulations Alex. You will be missed.

Member News: It’s a boy. Desi and his wife are the proud parents of a baby boy, Harrison, born last Friday. Congratulations, and have lots of fun over the next many months changing diapers, getting bottles ready, getting up in the middle of the night… night after night …..…..

It was a busy day for the Rotary Wheel. Luis Chacon spun because he accidentally took a detour last week to Hawaii, Carolina didn’t mind the detour at all – but considering he also had an anniversary, he got off rather cheap with $15. Gary Lawson, our recent retiree, has accepted the position as Executive Director of the West Covina Chamber – Congratulations – and a spin please – again it was $15. Bill Tarrozzi spun because he has a brand new baby newphew – again $15. Mark Tedesco was celebrating a birthday and of course he also hit the lucky $15. And last, but not least, our very own fireman, Alex Rodriquez spun the wheel – need I say what he hit?

Christmas Baskets: Wouldn’t you like to volunteer for this special project? This year we will be providing baskets to approximately 100 needy families. We are coordinating the program with Love Inc. this year. We already have some turkeys donated, but need lots more. We need whole frozen turkeys, can goods such as vegetables, yams, toys, books etc. – however, remember we need enough for 100 families. If you have any contacts at local grocery stores please call chair Mark Tedesco with the info. We will also need to put the baskets together, the date is Friday, December 16, 2005 at 6:00 PM (Location TBD). We will be handing out/delivering the baskets on Saturday, December 17, 2005.

Golf Tournament: April 24, 2005. Put it in your calendars.

Program: Who knew that we have a high tech special Robotics Lab right here in our backyard at West Covina High School. Teacher Bob Anderson, 2 students and 2 of the Robots built by the school’s Robotics Club were our special guests at the meeting. WCHS’s team is the only team in the San Gabriel Valley and they have fared quite well at national level competitions. In the first 4 years they have managed to place first 26th and then 11th in all of the US, a remarkable accomplishment for such a young program. They belong to a group called FIRST which was created because there seemed to be a lack of interest in robotics among young people and serves to inspire young people to become great engineers. One of the mottos is to Live Long and Work Hard -- not the usual Play Hard. The program is after school and the students do not receive credits for their efforts. Local students from Cal Poly Pomona serve as mentors for the group and help with the construction of the robots. The first competition is local, then regional, all the way till the National Superbowl of Smarts. The budget for the year is approx. $31,000 to pay for entry fees to competitions and for travel expenses. The team is looking for community support in the form of money, donations of certain tools, but also technical help from engineers. Wednesday, November 9th, was a special meeting. We had 6 visiting veterans at the meeting, and we all learned some rather fascinating things about serving in the American Military.

Program: We had 6 visiting veterans at the breakfast and 5 of them gave us a brief summary of their time in the service. Matt Walters presented us with a brief history of Veteran’s Day. It used to be called Armistice Day and was started back in 1918. George Dargan told us about the service of Lillian Kiel of Covina. She was a highly decorated WWII and Korea War veteran, and the Covina Post Office is going to be renamed in her honor. The West Covina Post Office is also going to honor her service to this Country with a Plague in their Post Office.

Especially the stories about World War II were riveting. I don’t think any of us can ever realize how bad the conditions of war really are! Did you know that during World War II some of the American soldiers were given left over can food from the first World War? One particular can of beet vegetable stew was so rancid one starving sickly dog roaming the country side wouldn’t even eat it? And the boots. They were not water sealed. The boots would get wet and muddy. The mud would dry on the outside, but the inside would remain wet. Your feet were hurting all the time and rather smelly!!! To this day, army veterans still are drawn to the boot section in stores and admire the boots made now a days. If only they had had that kind of boots back then. If you are interested, the book “Citizen Soldier” is recommended by the veterans.

From the Vietnam area, one of the most memorable experiences shared by the Veterans was the Freedom Bird. This is the plane that would take the soldiers home!!!

Red Ribbon Rally: All around a huge success. I know it is a lot of work, but also fun. If you didn’t volunteer this year, make sure you do so for next year. Making pancakes can actually be a lot of fun.

Shoots & Ladders: Well the police won – but I am sure you already know that with Mark and Mark rubbing it in at our meeting. Poor Alex, who was still black and blue from the tug or war event.

Program: Northview High School Coach David Ochoa spoke about the Wrestling program at Northview. The program has produced quite a few champions at the High School level who have moved on to various colleges and have been very successful there as well.

Hurricane Relief: Saturday and Sunday Sept 10th and 11th, we will host a Hurricane Relief Booth in the Eastland Shopping Center. The booth will be by Starbucks, located next to Albertons and the Party Store (corner of Citrus and Garvey). Starbucks will provide coffee to all of our volunteers. Please sign up to help this worthy cause. We need volunteers from 8AM till 6PM both days. Please stop by and encourage your friends to stop by to make a donation. A Day at the Theatre: On October 9th, 2005, the Grove Theatre in Upland will become the West Covina Sunrise Rotary Theatre for the day. Don Morrin and his fellow thespians from the Grove Theatre will perform ‘Man of La Mancha’ as a special fundraising performance for our Rotary Club. There will be sponsorship opportunities available, so if you are interested in this great marketing opportunity, please call Don Morrin now. Ticket info: Special VIP Seats $30. Regular tickets $25. All tickets include food and drinks, an auction and raffle prizes. The goal is to raise enough money to fund our Christmas Basket Program so we need to sell at least 300 tickets or 10 tickets per Club Member.

Community Day at the Fair: Sept 30th is the West Covina Community Day at the LA County Fair. Rick Marshall is coordinating cars for the parade, which will start at 5PM. Red Ribbon Rally. October 29th is the Red Ribbon Rally at West Covina High School. The planning meetings are held on Thursdays at 7:30 am at Denny’s. We need volunteers to sign up! Member News: Congratulations to Dave Harris and the Covina YMCA. They have now opened their West Covina branch on the Edgewood campus with Chris Kelso (a possible new Rotarian) as the Site Director.

Program: Greg Benton, who is a consultant to Post Secondary Education Facilities gave an interesting presentation about the industry. He used to work for the California Legislative agency who regulates post secondary educational facilities and now helps private education facilities with legal compliance and accreditation.

50/50 Raffle: Luis Chacon won the raffle, but luckily for the rest of us, drew the Queen of spades. Isn’t there a rule for how many times the same person can win????

President’s Message: Bring your dollar bills to our next meeting! We are bringing back our “Happy Dollar, Sad Dollar” sharing time. For those of you who are fairly new to the club, what does this mean? During “Happy Dollar, Sad Dollar” time you pay one dollar and share with your fellow Rotarians any news you have, be it happy or sad.

Beach party: August 27, 2005 at Crystal Cove in Newport Coast. The party will start at the beach, with volleyball games and lots of other fun in the sun. Bring your own drinks, food etc. for the Beach. We will then move to the Pool Site at Reniero Francisco’s new home in Newport Beach around 3:30 pm. Here we will enjoy a great BBQ catered by Joni’s Café . There will be access to the pool, showers, a lounge and more. Finally we will close out the day at Reniero’s home to enjoy his World Famous Margaritas. All are welcome to this family event. Program: Even though Reniero has left this Rotary Club, it seems his spirit is still with us. The speaker for the day was Albert Morino, who is an investment counselor. It seems he introduced Reniero to the world of investments when he hired him in 1988 to become part of Diversified.. and we all know what happened next.

Albert Morino is a board member of the Citrus Valley Health Foundation, a non-profit organization responsible for raising funds for the Queen of the Valley Hospital and Intercommunity Hospital among others. Both hospitals are not for profit facilities, and rely on donations from companies, foundations and individuals alike to keep their facilities up to date. Many hospitals in Southern California are closing due to financial problems. Mr. Morino reminded us of the importance of having a top notch hospital near by in case of emergencies and asked for our support. We were also treated to a neat video showing the birth of both hospitals. I had no idea that it was 2 sisters, a teacher and a nurse, who single handedly started, funded and ran Intercommunity Hospital when it first opened. Quiet an interesting video.

An American in Love with this Country

If you think you feel bad..
you can be happy you’re able to think.
When you’re walking about sadly…
how fortunate you’re able to walk.

Or when you begin your meal…
think how many have no food at all…
or complain how you feel…
what a luxury your health really is.

In a country such as ours…
with its trees and its flowers…
and its days and its nights…
full of freedom and rights…
can’t we see what it means to be free?

There’s no country on earth…
like the land of our birth..
we’re Americans…
and we’re proud to be.

But if you had a dollar…
how you’d scream and you’d holler…
if someone tried to take it away.

Listen to me, stranger..
your freedom’s in danger…
look around at your country today

The left is too left…
and the right’s much too right…
the middle can’t make up its’ mind

it’s not others we should fear…
look into your mirror..
a traitor in there you might find.
He comes in many forms…
dwells in offices and dorms…
and forgets that American is his name
Or he elects a man…
then does what he can…
to put his representative to shame.

Or he feels that it’s wrong…
for a nation to be strong…
and a uniform is no way to be free.

If we complacently…
ignore American’s plea…

So our example must show…
that we’re proud to know…
we’re Americans…
and we understand…
that the bruises and the scars…
on our stripes and stars…
are proof…for the youth to see…

that Americans must strive…
to keep American alive…

for freedom… can never be free.

Club Service: Don Morrin and his committee have been busy scheduling events for the year, and the first one is coming up quick: 3rd Annual Beach Party: August 27, 2005 at Crystal Cove in Newport Coast. The party will start at the beach, with volleyball games and other fun games. We will then move to the Pool Site at Reniero Francisco’s new home in Newport Beach around 3:30pm. Here we will enjoy a great BBQ catered by Joni’s Café . There will be access to the pool, showers, a lounge and more. Finally we will close out this day of celebrating life, enjoying good company, food, family and friends, by retreating to Reniero’s home to enjoy his World Famous Margaritas. All are welcome to this family event. Please bring your kids, grandkids, husbands, wives, friends and neighbors. The more the merrier. It’s the end of an era! Prez Luis is gone, well one more day, and then he is gone -- however, now he can be fined, and I am sure our Sergeant of Arms is going to find many, many occasions to fine Luis for all the shenanigans he has pulled during his term. So Luis, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for all your hard work, but get ready, as you have now been reduced to one of Carolina’s subjects! Oh, and by the way, we are so happy you were able to enjoy “Phil’s harmonica” playing in Chicago!
Welcome Carolina. We all look forward to an existing year.

President’s Message:
Annual Conference in Chicago was a great success with attendees from all over the world. The next conferences are held as follows: 2006: Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmo, Sweden; 2007: New Orleans; 2008: Los Angeles. Our club, as well as all the other clubs in the Los Angeles area, will be invited to participate in the planning of this event.
My last formal comments as your President are to say thank you for honoring me and allowing me to lead our club in our (RI) Centennial year and hope I provided the leadership and direction worthy of our club. I want to thanks my Board for the support and guidance in keeping me focused on our goals and objectives. Lastly, thank you Bruce for keeping my gable on “ice.” No, I can’t prove it just going on a gut feeling….

Rotary Training: District is hosting a Membership and Foundation training day July 23, 2005. For more info please contact Carolina and/or District Website.

Throw Out Party: Fun was had by all, that is for sure. Steve Hernandez and his beautiful wife Barbara hosted the annual Throw Out Party at their gorgeous home in West Covina. The party was catered by Joni’s Cafe. The steak, chicken and ribs were all delicious, and all the side dishes were scrumptious. Most of our members were there, and Luis was thrown out in Fashion without getting wet, maybe next year our new President will not be so lucky!

Her simple step-by-step systems have helped hundreds of professionals to eliminate nervousness, command audience’s attention and deliver sales-winning presentations. She is very upbeat and fun, and kept us all at attention.

Member news: Congratulations to Don and Cheryl Morrin who celebrated their 32nd wedding anniversary today. Quite an accomplishments. But as Gary noted, he wonders if Cheryl wasn’t appointed to Don by God, not by choice……..
Police Golf Tournament: The West Covina Police department is holding is annual golf tournament on June 30th. We need to support the groups that support us, so if you can, please sign up for a fun day of golfing.
Fundraiser: Our new Sgt-at-Arms Mark Tedesco was absent, so we didn’t get to enjoy anyone spinning the wheel this week.

Program: Two of the Scholarship recipients, Angelica Pena and Josselle Macatiag, both from Nogales High School, came for a visit during the breakfast. They both expressed their sincere gratitude for the scholarships received. They both echoed that receiving a scholarship like the one from our Rotary Club gives them hope that people do care, that they do have a chance for getting a great college education even when they and their parents can not afford the expenses. Both will be attending UCLA in the fall, studying Medicine, Public Relations and Political Science – as they are not quite 100% sure yet which fields they will pursue.

President’s Message:
My term as your president is coming to an end and I must admit it was an interesting experience. At first I was not sure if I should be honored by the selection or was I being set-up… Now that the end is near I know that I was set-up for a great experience and honored in serving as your President on our Centennial Year. I am looking forward to the RI Convention in Chicago 18-22nd. I’ll gladly report back upon my return. Meanwhile please treat Alex with kindness as he will step-up and lead our meeting on the 22nd.
Foundation News: Luis Chacon and Mark Tedesco attended a workshop for grants and other related foundation information June 3rd. Both were excited about the info provided. Our club is eligible to receive 50% of the money we donate to the foundation back from the foundation to use in our programs in our community. The bad news is, that we have not been donating to the foundation, and therefore have not been able to apply for any grant money from the foundation. Luis hopes to work on this area of our club as immediate past president.
Stepping up to the Challenge. The pancake baking went great. With the help of John Scheuplein, Don Morrin, Kathy & Greg Benton & my friends Carla Deal and Brandy Parslow, we baked ‘hundreds’ of pancakes, enough to feed all the walkers and workers, and the many other park visitors. We even feed several basketball players, among them Francisco Reneiro, who still plays in a basket ball league at the park every Saturday morning. He didn’t eat any pancakes though, too un-healthy I guess. Also thanks to Carolina for bringing Rotary information for our info table.

Member news: Congratulations to Carolina Chacon who has been named one of the most influential women in the San Gabriel Valley by the YMCA.

Police Golf Tournament: The West Covina Police department is holding is annual golf tournament on June 30th. We need to support the groups that support us, so if you can, please sign up for a fun day of golfing.

Fundraiser: Our new Sgt-at-Arms Mark Tedesco had a very successful day! He fined all members who were not wearing their pins, and raised $100. Great Job.

Program: The speaker June 8th was Chief Elliot with the West Covina Fire Department. He gave a very interesting presentation about the workings of the West Covina Fire department, and we even got a little inside scoop about our incoming president elect, Alex Rodriguez. We also learned that a fire truck is really One Big Red Tool Box that the firemen get to play with every day -- no wonder firemen always seem to be in a good mood!
However, all joking aside. The fire department provides a life saving service to the city and the surrounding areas. They get calls daily for all kinds of emergencies, from getting cats out of trees, auto accidents, medical emergencies to fires. So far in 2005 there have been 2 fire fatalities in West Covina. According to the chief, many fires are often preventable, an example being the fires caused by burning candles. With the increased popularity of candles, there has also been an increase in fires caused by candles. So be careful with those candles!

President’s Message:
My term is almost over and many of my goals for 2004-2005 were met but the most valuable experience I take with me as your 2004-2005 President is what I call the learning factor. I learned so much about Rotary and its role not only locally but globally and most importantly, I was given the opportunity to know each and everyone of you that much better. All this did was motivate me to learn more and become more involved with Rotary and our community. I look forward to bigger and better things for our future beginning with membership, community services, and club services such as a trip to Costa Rica this coming December and our International Program chaired by Mark Tedesco.
Stepping up to the Challenge is the 3rd annual 5-K walk organized by the American Cancer Society, Kaiser, ICF Foundation and the City of West Covina. We will be making pancakes for approx. 300 people at the event. Volunteers, please contact Lone Sorensen for more information.

Angels Baseball: The game was a blast. So much has changed since I last went to a ball game. Games for the kids everywhere, batting cages, and other baseball related activities and the food choices sure have improved. Angel stadium has many restaurants with lots of food choices. The game was almost too short, at least it seemed like it went by way too fast. If you did not make it, you missed a great outing…

Scholarship Dinner: The Scholarship dinner May 26th was a great success. Most of the awardees were in attendance together with many of their family members. Several of our club members were also in attendance to honor the scholarship winners. Dr. Jessica Martinez received a Rotary Scholarship as a teen and this year’s recipients were excited to see a ‘real live’ successful former scholarship recipient at the dinner.

A total of $10,000 in scholarships were awarded as follows:
From Nogales High School: Jamie Concepcion, Terra Rey, Jesselle Macatiag, Sharon Gonzalez, Javier Alday, Maritza Portillo, Gabriel Melchor, Elizabeth Martinez, Emmanuel Uyan , Angelica Pena, Rosie Fonseca and Miriam Delgado.

Thanks to event chair Alex Rodriquez and his committee – and thanks to the Tenants for use of their beautiful facility, which by the way could be the perfect location for a fun evening of dance, music and food if we should choose to have a dance the night away fund raiser or simply a Rotarian night out.

Throw out Party: The party of the year is planned for June 25th at 5:00 PM at Steve Hernandez’s home. Prior to the party, we need to plan, speculate, and decorate and set the proper mode to formerly ‘throw out’ Luis. Please contact Carolina if you are interested in helping. On the 25th, the decorating fun will start at 2:00PM.
Stepping up to the Challenge: We will be making and serving pancakes for approx. 300 to 400 people June 4th, at Cameron Park for the 3rd annual 5-K Colon Cancer Walk organized by the City of West Covina, Kaiser Hospital and the American Cancer Society. We still need volunteers to help with this exciting PR opportunity from approx. 6:30 AM to noon. Please see Lone for further info.
The Mold has Spoken: The mold is still active, but didn’t catch anyone at the last meeting, but be prepared………….
Community Day at the Fair: Dave Harris is chairing this event at the LA County Fair on Sept. 30th, 2005. We will be participating in the West Covina Community Day Parade. Please see Dave to sign up for the committee. We will have a total of 20 free tickets for the participants in the parade.
Officers: Mark Tedesco as our new Sgt-at-Arms is stepping right into the role. This Wednesday, Jessika Martinez was lucky enough to spin the wheel. It turns out she is actually Doctor Martinez -- shame on us for not using her proper title in the program for the golf tournament – a fact pointed out by one of her employees in a letter to the club.

Red Ribbon Rally. This year the rally will be held October 29th at West Covina High School. Alex Rodrigues is the chair, and the committee meetings have already started. If you are interested in helping with this event, the meetings are at 7:30 AM at Denny’s Restaurant (on Azusa).

Scholarship Dinner: The Scholarship Dinner will be held May 26, 2005, at 6:30 PM, at the Tenant’s Recollections, 2526 E. Workman in Covina ( by Citrus Ave). All members will be billed for dinner, whether attending or not.
50/50 Raffle: The raffle was won, for the second week in a row, by Don Morrin, however he once again didn’t’ draw that all important card. There are now only 9 cards left.
Program: The program was presented by the AQMD and was very, very interesting. We learned that after 5 years, a child born in the Southern California area, will have lost 1/5 of his/hers lung capacity simply due to the smog in our area. The air we breathe every day contains 145 different cancer causing agents – and that’s not counting people working in hazardous environments. In the US Los Angeles and Houston have the worst air quality. The AQMD is the largest agency of its kind in the US. They regulate and enforce the air quality for 16 million people and their 10 million cars. She closed with a rather truthful comment: When you can’t breathe, nothing else matters.

It has long been contended that there are male jokes and female jokes, and there are unisex jokes. This is a female joke. I hope the women will love it and that the men will pass it along to a woman who will love it.

A woman was sitting at a bar enjoying an after work cocktail with her girlfriends when an exceptionally tall, handsome, extremely sexy, middle-aged man entered. He was so striking that the woman could not take her eyes off him. The young-at-heart man noticed her overly attentive stare and walked directly toward her. Before she could offer her apologies for so rudely staring, he leaned over and whispered to her "I'll do anything, absolutely anything, that you want me to do, no matter how kinky, for $20.00......on one condition."
Flabbergasted, the woman asked what the condition was. The man replied, "You have to tell me what you want me to do in just three words."
The woman considered his proposition for a moment, then slowly removed a $20 bill from her purse, which she pressed into the man's hand along with her address. She looked deeply into his eyes, and slowly, and meaningfully said.... "Clean my house."

President’s Message: Stepping up to the Challenge is the 3rd annual 5-K walk organized by the City of West Covina, Kaiser and other companies. This year it will be held at Cameron Park on June 4th. We have been asked to help with the Pancake breakfast. Volunteers please call Luis to sign up. They are only expecting approx. 200 people – a piece of cake for this club.

The Mole has Spoken: The mole is still active, so make sure you always greet all your Rotary friends at the meetings, or you will find yourself spinning the wheel.

Community Day at the Fair: The LA County Fair has invited us to participate in a Parade during the Community Day at the fair on Sept. 30, 2005. Dave Harris will chair the event. This will be a great PR opportunity for the club and we will get 20 free passes for the fair for the members participating.

Officers: Mark Tedesco is our new Sgt-at-Arms and look out. New rules will be in place soon so make sure you brush up on the etiquette of the meetings, make sure to read the weekly newsletter and check out the website from time to time – or you may find yourself spinning the wheel.

Reniero – we wish you the best with Rotary in Newport!
We will miss you dearly!

President’s Message: Today was Reniero’s last day as a member of our Rotary Club, and what an impact he has had on this club. He was one of the Charter members and has been in rotary for 14 years. Some of his recruits for this club are Luis & Carolina Chacon, Jessika Martinez, Steve Hernandez, Don Morrin and Rick Marshall and that in itself shows he impact he has had. In celebration of the many contributions Reniero has made to our club, several members brought presents for him to send him off in a proper way.
Miriam Tenant gave Reniero a tripled boxed photo album where he can keep some of the memories -- and never forget us. Don Morrin gave him a super power high charged spot light so he can always find his way back to us. Jessika, who may have become a Lion had it not been for Reniero, gave him something close to her heart for him to remember her by: a bottle of wine. Luis thanked Reniero for bringing him into Rotary and in a sense providing a new home and circle of friends after Luis’s army days. The camaraderie and friendships of Rotary has meant the world to Luis. He also commented on the successes that Reniero has made for himself both in business and in his personal life. Reniero is a self made successful business man, who is giving back to the community in many ways. Carolina told us that Reniero is very popular in the West Covina Chamber, especially with the women. It seems he is not only great looking and a sharp dresser, but also smells really good!!! Carolina and Luis then presented Reniero with a pair of gold Rotary Cufflinks. A beautiful present. Friends forever!
It seems Reniero has also made some friends with the local law enforcement agencies. Chief Frank and Cdr.Mark Tedesco, on behalf of the West Covina Police Department, presented Reniero with his very own Swat Team Pin, Swat Team T-shirt and Coffee mug, with Reniero’s name on them. These items are only issued to official members of the Swat Team and they had to get special permission to have the items made for Reniero. A great honor in deed. Now Reniero can speed through West Covina all he wants. He just has to remember to wear the T-shirt, with the pin & have the coffee mug firmly planted on the dash board.
Reniero thanked all the members of our club. Rotary has been a big part of his life for the last 14 years and he knows he is going to miss this club. He has transferred to the Sunrise Club in Newport, but does not think anything can ever replicate what we have here. Some things are very special in a person’s life. Getting married, having children are some of the most important things in life. However, for Reniero, Rotary has provided some of the moments he is most proud of and is very, very glad to have been a part of this Rotary Club.

The Mold has Spoken: It seems the mold has finally come forward and named a certain club member who did not greet the mold. Rick Marshall wasn’t too happy, but did spin the wheel.
Community Day at the Fair: The LA County Fair has invited us to participate in a Parade during the Community Day at the fair on Sept. 30, 2005. This will be a great PR opportunity for the club and we will get 20 free passes for the fair for the members participating.

Officers: The District Assembly was very successful. The theme for next year is: Service Above Self, and the incoming officers are ready for the task. It seems some incriminating photos of the club members attending a very somber, serious luncheon at Assembly may come back to haunt certain club members in the future.

Member news: Reniero will host an open house at his new business office in Irvine Sept 17th from noon till 4pm, and all are welcome. And there are several clubs in the neighborhood if we choose to party on afterwards. Chief Wills did raise some concerns what would happen if a bunch of riff rafts from West Covina went all the way down to Uptown Irvine, and advised us to be careful during the trip.

Every Rotarian Every Year: Jessika reported that we do not yet have 100% participation in the RI Foundation goal of a donation from all club members of $100 each. Still 2 months left to make that donation.
Scholarship Dinner: Alex Rodriquez and his committee have already received all the applications and they are ready to pick the scholarship winners. The dinner is tentatively set for May 26th. More info will be provided next week.
50/50 Raffle: The raffle was won by yours truly, but unfortunately I didn’t draw the right card.

Program: Dave Harris provided some nice entertainment for the day. We played Jenka. The loosing team, the team that made the tower fall over, had to pay a fine as determined by spinning the wheel. It seems we are all incredible good at this game, and it went on and on and on without the tower tilting over. I haven’t seen so many adults so into a game before. The room was a fire with anticipating and team strategy. Finally Don got his piece out, but in the excitement of having removed the piece, a celebratory toss in the air turned into a disaster as he dropped the piece on top of the tower and the whole thing fell over. Actually a fitting end for a very fun day.

President’s Message:
Officers: The District Assembly is this Saturday and our club has 100% participation from the officers for 2005-06. In the past maybe 4 or 5 members have attended – this year we are going 11 members strong. Great to have so many people involved. The District is hosting an Aloha Fellowship mixer Friday evening at the Sycamore Inn in Rancho Cucamonga and all are welcome. Please contact Carolina Chacon for more info.
Community Day at the Fair: The LA County Fair has invited us to participate in a Parade during the Community Day at the fair on Sept. 30, 2005. This will be a great PR opportunity for the club. During the parade we will be able to throw items out into the crowd. This can be informational flyers or fun items to promote our club. If you are interested in helping with the planning of this event, please contact our president. Those participating will have free admission too.
GSE: District is hosting a group of students from Korea in the coming weeks. A welcoming BBQ for the students is planned and everyone is welcome to attend. Please see previous email from our president for further info.
50/50 Raffle: As you all know the golf tournament was a great success this year both from a players fun standpoint as well as financially. A motion was made and passed at the meeting to put the money previously allocated from the 50/50 raffle as the grand prize for the raffle at the golf tournament back to the club. The motion was unanimously passed and starting next week we will continue the weekly 50/50 raffle until someone draws that all important card.
Volunteers: At the golf tournament we had several volunteers who are not members of our club. A special great big Thank You goes to Mike Touhey’s wife Debbie, Mark Tedesco’s wife Lisa, and Vince – Danielle’s significant - for their hard work all day long. It was also noted that the pizza served on the golf course was a great success. We also had a couple of hot wheeling golf carts drivers perusing the course with bottles of alcohol in the back of their carts. It seems some people did enjoy a few drinks on the course, and this may have helped provide the festive mood of the day.
A special thanks was also extended to Reniero Francisco, who moved, both his home and his business, to Newport Beach. Even though he could have cruised through the last months of his membership here, he stepped up to the plate and was very instrumental in the success of the tournament.

Member news: We celebrated a couple of birthdays, Don Morrin and Elva Quintanilla, who both opted to spin the wheel instead on singing Happy Birthday to themselves!
Tax Break Anyone? It seems we have a celebrity among us. One of our members was recently featured on the front page of the San Gabriel Tribune Newspaper for creating havoc at the San Dimas City Hall. It seems she has purchased a historic home and is now ‘demanding’ a tax break from the city. Actually she is only benefiting from the Mills Act which provides home owners, like Diana Veloz, who own historic homes with tax breaks on their homes. However, they do have to maintain and keep their historic homes in their original form, which can be costly. Luckily for Diana, she got a free pass when she spun the wheel, so together with that little bleak tax break from the city, she is having a petty good month. By the way, Diana has promised to host a club event so we can all see and admire her special Adobe home.
Police Athletic Event: This past weekend the West Covina Police Dept participated in the annual Baker to Baker Run. Our very own Mark Tedesco ran 8 miles through the desert, which, per the Chief, was a pretty good feat for “such an old guy!”
The M & M Show: It’s official. Mark Tedesco and Mark Taylor have agreed to co-chair the golf event for next year. Thank you.
Visitors: We had a very special visit from our very own Past President John “Ski” Schimanski, a long time Rotarian and now Honorary member of our club. He drove all the way from Las Vegas just to buy our 50/50 raffle tickets – well, that was his excuse anyways. He also hosted a dinner for the West Covina Police dept after the Baker to Baker Run and it was great for the friends to catch up with one another.
We also had a special appearance from a gentleman named John Kahvedjian Who is he? Well he is actually a member of our club, but has not attended a meeting in a very long time. Hope to see you more often now John…
Program: The speaker for the day was Sue Dunn, of the West Covina Chamber of Commerce. She updated the club of the various activities the Chamber is involved in. The Citizen of the Year award is coming up and we were encouraged to nominate someone from our club for the honor. The nominee does not have to live in West Covina, but must be contributing to the community of West Covina. Forest Tennant has been selected for this very special honor twice.
Sue Dunn encouraged all to come and shop at the Farmers Market in downtown West Covina on Saturday mornings. It has become of the areas best markets in the past few years. Sue also provided flyers for some of the other activities coming up.
Club Hottie: In addition to being in the Chamber, Sue is also active in the Lyon’s Club. They are getting ready for an upcoming fund raiser and asked if we could provide our club hottie to be auctioned off at the event. By an overwhelming majority of the ladies in the room, Frank Wills was nominated. The chief was a little reluctant though to accept this new status as a sex symbol for our club. He didn’t seem to think that a ’50 year old balding guy’ would fetch much money.

President’s Message:
Luis was home sick in bed so Carolina took over the president responsibilities for the day. Carolina had a few announcements – District Assembly is coming up – Visit the District website for all the detailed information. All are welcome to attend. Many workshops will be offered on various rotary functions. Also, remember to tally all your volunteer hours for April, as the totals will be forwarded to District.
Officers: As you probably all know by now, our club secretary Danielle announced in March that she would be resigning from the post after the golf tournament. Danielle, thank you for all your hard work. You will truly be missed. Our new club secretary is Jessika Martinez – thank you Jessika for accepting the position and welcome to the board.
Volunteer Opportunity: Kathy Benton thanked for the help at the Stepping Stones work day April 16th. In addition, Stepping Stones is hosting a tea in May; tickets are $22 per person. Please call Kathy Benton for further info: 626-974-1162.
Program: Our speaker for the day was Larry Russell, who is an investment adviser. His presentation focused on the management costs charged by Mutual Fund managers. The costs charged can make a huge difference in the net growth of your wealth held in Mutual Funds. He stressed we need to look closely at the costs before we rush out and buy funds even though they are recommended by services such as Morning Star. The earnings often do not make up for the expenses charged by the managers and we would be better off buying funds with lower earnings if they have lower expenses.

WOW!!! GREAT Golf Tournament News: We now have 160 paid golfers and the tournament is full. We are not taking any more golfers, in fact we are turning people away. A First - but what a good first. An absolute superb job by the Golf Committee.
Next Golf meeting: TAX DAY, Friday April 15th at 5pm the West Covina fire station on Puente and Rowland (1435 West Puente Avenue - (626) 338-8800). We will prepare all the goodie bags for the tournament, and need lots of help.
If you have any items for the raffle or auction, please bring to the fire station Friday. Thank you very much to the many Rotarians who stepped up and got/made donations for the tournament.
Tournament Dinner: Even if you are not golfing in the tournament on Monday, please join us for the dinner. There will be a lot of people in attendance and both the Live and Silent Auctions have lots of truly great items ‘for sale’ so the evening should be a blast. The cost of dinner is $40 and can be paid for at the door. Please be at the South Hills Country Club by 6pm for the dinner.

Special Guest: Mary Ann Kistler, a member of the San Dimas Rotary Club and our current District Assistant Governor attended our meeting today -- and she won the 50-50 raffle. Mary Ann did not draw the Ace though, and money in the pot is now approx. $1,300.
Raffle News: Dr. Lee Lau suggested that we continue the 50-50 raffle at the golf tournament to raise even more money, and it was left up to the Golf Committee to decide the format of the raffle. The committee decided to take $1,250 of the 50-50 money for the golf tournament raffle. $1,000 will be the grand prize, with $250 as a second prize – this will be in addition to the many other great prizes we already have. Special tickets will be sold at the tournament for $5 each, and we should raise a lot of money with such a great grand prize. After the golf tournament the club will have to decide what is going into the pool as seed money for the next 50-50 raffle.
Volunteer Opportunity: Stepping Stones is a having work day, Saturday, April 16, from 8am to 4pm, at 5208 Oakbank Drive, Covina. There will be painting, gardening, and sandbox jobs available for your enjoyment. Please call Kathy Benton for further info: 626-974-1162.
4-way Test Competition: Miriam Tenant reported that our 4-way test competition winner, Tom Murphy, faced very sharp competition from 4 young ladies at the regional level. He was the crowd favorite and did very well, unfortunately, was out performed and didn’t win. He did however enjoy the whole experience, learned a lot, and has wowed to be back next year.
Program: The speaker for the day was Brooke Fix from Y2K Marketing. He is a local marketing consultant who has also spoken at chamber functions. He did a Power Point presentation called ‘The Marketing Equation’ educating us about the 4 components of marketing: Interrupt, Engage, Educate and Offer. A topic beneficial to us all. Next week’s topic will be “The Truth about Investing: Expected Investment Returns Net of Cost” presented by Mr. Larry Russell. See you all Next week.

What a terrific meeting we had today. My opinion of Judges will be forever changed. Our speaker today, Judge Khan, is not only a 17 year veteran of the bench, but quite the stand up comic! If you were absent, you really missed a great meeting.

GREAT Golf Tournament News: We now have 158 paid golfers and the tournament is full. We are unable to take any more golfers due to the time constraint but also because South Hills Country Club only has 75 golf carts and we will have to rent additional carts at $75 a piece. This extra costs will eat away at the profits, so no more golfers. This is a first – we are having to turn golfers away. BUT, please encourage everyone to sign up for the dinner, which is going to be a blast with this many people in attendance. Also encourage everyone to buy ads for the program, sign up for tee sponsorships or to provide prizes for the raffle and auction. New additions to the auction are Dodgers & Clippers tickets, and hotel stays at the Gold Nugget & Gold Strike in Las Vegas. We need a lot more volunteers to help during the event. Please let Mark Tedesco, Bill or Danielle know what time you can help. The next Golf Tournament meeting is Monday, 4/11/05 at 5pm at Reniero’s office.
Special recognition to Danielle for doing such a great job with the organization of the golf tournament. We couldn’t have done it without you. This is going to be the best golf tournament ever.
President’s Message:
We have a new Rotarian among us. The long awaited installation of Gregg Benton finally took place today, just barely in time for his participation in the Golf Tournament. Something about a handicap, an annual challenge with the Lions Club, and a dream Bill had about his dad, telling him to get that trophy back!

Program: Judge Abe Khan was a great speaker today. Not only did he provide some insight into the workings of the judicial system, reminded us of the importance of voting for the right people to become judges and that the jury system in the US is the Hallmark of a free society, but he also entertained us, in fact he had us roaring with laughter, when he recited actual attorney questions and testimony from various court cases.
The speaker Wednesday, April 13th will be Brooke Fix from Y2K Marketing. He will be speaking about the latest marketing concepts. An interesting subject that we can benefit from.

A soldier from the South to a Soldier from the North! Oh how I love this Great Country of Ours. We tip our Red Hats to you all. Not a cryptic message, just a reminder of the great fun we had at the meeting this Wednesday. If you were there, You Know!

President’s Message: Once again several member email addresses were rejected this week, so please make sure you update your information on the website. Special ‘attention’ will be given at the next meeting to the members who have not yet done so.
April is Volunteer Month and our president encourages everyone to donate our time this month. Remember to keep track of your hours and report to Danielle at the end of the month. The hours will be tallied and submitted to District. If you are aware of projects in the community where we can volunteer, please bring the information to the next meeting.
Faith Community Church have a volunteer program where they go out to houses in the community and help with yard work and house repairs etc. If you know of family in our area needing help, please provide the information to Alex Rodriguez

GREAT Golf Tournament News: We now have 100 golfers signed up and paid for, which is more golfers than ever before. This is going to be the best golf tournament ever. However, we do still have room for more golfers, and also encourage all to invite your friends to the dinner afterwards. The more people at the dinner, the better the raffle and auctions will be -- the more money we will raise for the scholarship program.
We still need more prizes for the raffle and silent auction. Please contact everyone you know who could possible donate some goods or services. We are looking for gift certificates to restaurants, spa’s, hair salons, stores, or merchandise we can use as is or in baskets. Please provide info to Diana Veloz.
The next Golf Tournament meeting is Monday, 4/4/05 at Reniero’s office.
Program: Tom Murphy, our club representative and group winner for the 4-Way Test competition, gave an excellent speech. He has obviously worked very hard to get to this point in the competition. And the Bird says, well You Know.
The speaker on April 6th will be Judge Khan, who presided over the Heidi Fleiss case.
Mark Tedesco won the raffle, but luckily for us, he didn’t draw that magic card. Now only 13 cards left for that big win.
We ended the program with a wonderful performance by one of our guests from the Rowdy Red Hat Ladies of West Covina. The 94 year old feisty lady performed an old patriotic song about the Soldier from the North and the Soldier from the South finishing off to a standing ovation. All in all it was a great meeting. President’s Message: In the absence of Luis and Carolina Chacon, who were both unable to attend, Alex Rodriquez took over the responsibilities of running the meeting, and he did a good job at that. Several emails were sent to the members this week. Please make sure to check the Summary of Key Board Decisions and contact Luis Chacon if you think we are not in compliance with all rules.

Internet update: Please access your database on the website and update your personal information. Several e-mail addresses and other pertinent information seemingly have not been updated, and our president urges everyone to check to make sure that the info on the website is current.

Golf Tournament News: The tournament is now less than a month away and we only have 84 golfers signed up so far -- we need more golfers. We also need more prizes for the raffle and silent auction. New additions this week were tickets to Disneyland. Please contact Diana Veloz if you know of companies who can be contacted for prizes. Don’t forget we are also selling ads for the program. All the pricing information is in the golf tournament flyer.

Program: The attendance at the meeting was very, very low, and it is a shame that so many of our members didn’t attend. Dr. Fujita provided us with a very interesting presentation about healthy eating habits. It is amazing to me that many of the foods we consume on a daily basis are actually very poisonous for our bodies - and we keep enjoying them anyways.

The speaker for March 30^th will be Tom Murphy, who is our club’s representative and group winner for the 4-Way Test competition. We will have the opportunity to listen to his speech and meet his coach. The speaker on April 6^th will be Judge Khan, who presided over the Heidi Fleiss case.
